Books I Wanted to Read but Didn’t Because of Negative Reviews

Hi everyone! I haven’t posted in about two weeks – maybe you have noticed, maybe you haven’t. I have mainly been spending my time studying, and when you spend the day writing assignments, you don’t really want to write even more stuff. Perhaps I should learn to manage my time better.

Anyway, I’ve had the idea for this post for a while now. Sometimes I really love the premise of a book and look forward to reading it, but sometimes the reviews start coming in and I feel discouraged about picking it up. This is what happened to most of the books on this list and it is unlikely that I will ever read them.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by John Tiffany and J. K. Rowling

I was initially very excited to read this book because I thought it was a new novel by J. k. Rowling. Then I heard that it was a screenplay. I don’t know about you, but I would rather watch the screenplay in action than read it. The actual screenplay is currently a play in London, and I thought it was a bit of a money-grab to release it as a screenplay. I felt a little bit duped, and decided that I didn’t need to read it, especially after I read negative reviews. The reviews made me think that I could do without reading it.

Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings

I really wanted to read Zenith! I love Sasha Alsberg and she is a great youtuber. In 2016, the authors released the first part to the book, which I decided to buy because it was only about $2. I didn’t actually read it; I’m not big on science-fiction, but I wanted to support Sasha Alsberg. Anyway, after Zenith came out two months ago, I kept checking the reviews to see if readers liked it. Unfortunately, the reviews on goodreads are mostly negative. Seeing as I never read science-fiction, there is not really much point in buying this book. But I probably would have bought it if it was a contemporary, so the next time a booktuber releases a contemporary/similar book, I will totally buy it.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

This book was really popular about two years ago. I considered reading it, so I read some goodreads reviews and somehow managed to find a spoiler. It told me what happened in the ending, which made me a bit weirded out. It kind of put me off reading it. I also watched the movie a few weeks back and feel no need to read the book. I thought the movie was pretty average and kind of ridiculous.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I really loved the Twilight series when I was twelve. It would have made sense for me to read The Host, but I think it was rather because my friend didn’t like it opposed to negative reviews that stopped me from reading it. I didn’t know about goodreads in 2009 (did it even exist?), so I based my judgement on one person’s opinion. Since then, I mostly hear that this is a good book and that people really enjoyed it (and are still waiting for a sequel).

The Selection series by Kiera Cass

I was going to read The Selection series a few months ago and only just realised it completely slipped my mind. I have mostly read negative reviews of this series and I am unsure of whether I want to read it still. I’m reading less young adult these days because I find I’m not enjoying it as much, so maybe it’s best that I don’t read these books.

The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

I actually really want to read this book. It is the negative reviews on goodreads that is stopping me. I love the movie and have always thought that the book would be good. I’ve read another book by the author, Last Night at Chateau Marmont, which I kind of liked but disliked the ending. Maybe if I see this book for a good price in a bookstore one day I will but it. Surely it’s bound to be in an op shop?

  1. I’ve heard really good things about the actual play – the screenplay itself isn’t bad, it’s just not what I and I guess a lot fans of the series expected the 8th story to be and it’s not really written by J.K unfortunately.

I’m one of those people who really enjoyed The Host and are still waiting for the sequel haha 🙂

    1. It did make me frustrated to learn it wasn’t written by JK. I would imagine seeing the actual play would be really cool.
I’m so torn about whether I should read The Host! Haha hopefully the sequel will come 🙂

  2. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES READ THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, especially if you loved the movie. It was awful. So, so awful!

I would recommend The Host if it sounds interesting to you, but you mentioned you aren’t big into Sci-Fi. Still, it’s light on the Sci, lol. The Selection series I thought worth the time even though it was kind of awful. It was fun, and I usually enjoy reading a YA series at the beginning of summer vacation, so I enjoyed it. But if you’re having a hard time squeezing in your TBR, you can skip it. You’re not missing all that much.

    1. Haha okay I won’t read The Devil Wears Prada! 😂
Hmm I might try The Host one day. I’m glad to hear it’s light on the sci-fi. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to read The Selection soon, I’m not totally against reading it. 🙂

  3. If I had watched the movie Everything Everything before reading the book I would find it ridiculous and extremely over the top annoying. I really don’t think the movie did the book justice at all. I really liked the book and though it was a bit cliche, it wasn’t anywhere near as strange as the movie was. I hope you get around to reading it soon! 🙂

  4. I love The Selection! But if you’re starting to not be as interested in YA then it is probably for the best to stray away from it. Great post! ☺️💕

  5. I love the Devil Wears Prada film but the book was just awful! And I still haven’t read Cursed Child but I’m seeing the play in the fall so I suppose I should get on that… eventually…

  6. I am one of those that was disappointed by Cursed Child lol. Loved The Selection though. Well, the first 3 books. The rest in the series not so much.

  7. Such a great post! I hope your studying went well! I’ve never read any of these books. The most recent book I’ve avoided reading is The Truth and Lies of Ella Black. I really wanted to read it, but there were so many negative reviews on goodreads that I decided not to read it.

  8. I’ve read both The Host and The Selection. I would say that they’re both very good. If you’re not really enjoying Young Adult, then yeah I guess stay away from The Selection, however what I really liked about it’s based in the future and that the U.S is not what it once was. It’s actually a monarchy and people are put into…sectors basically. And each sector has a set career. I thought that was interesting. But it does have a lot of cheesy romance, so if you’re not into that then maybe The Selection. But, if you’re into more of a…deeper message from a YA read/compared to The Selection, then you should read The Host. I just think it has such a beautiful message about life and how we as humans/living things shouldn’t take things for granted. I can see why it has bad reviews though because in the beginning, it’s kind of a slow build up. It took me awhile to really get into the book, but by the end of it, I think I was crying because of the message it relayed. That, or I’m just a weeper haha. Meyer was supposed to write a sequel, but she hasn’t yet.

    1. Oh yeah that does sound interesting! I wouldn’t be completely against reading it and from the other commenters I’ve only heard good things 🙂 Haha well I do like romance so I might be into it!
The Host sounds good too. I’m glad you liked it, but it’s too bad there was never a sequel!

  9. I really enjoyed this list. The Cursed Child was okay but it felt very fanfictiony to me. Like you said it was if they only released it to make more money off it. As for the Selection, save yourself, don’t read it. I listened the audiobooks of the first three books of the series out of curiosity and it’s weirdly addictive and also awful. I wanted to stop each time I finished a book but I also wanted to know the end. *shudders at the memory*

This is why I usually avoid reading reviews until I finish the book.
I wasn’t interested in Zenith (although I like Sasha’s videos) but after reading the bad reviews I’m intrigued to see for myself how bad it actually is. So it’s had the opposite effect. One book I am avoiding because of bad reviews is After You, the sequel to Me Before You. I loved that book so much I don’t want to ruin it with a bad sequel.

    Sorry for the long comment.

    1. That’s what I’ve heard about the cursed child, I don’t really like the idea of it. Oh that’s a pity about the selection! I’ll give it a miss then.
I’m really bad at avoiding reviews before I finish the book 😬
That’s funny, I definitely am not going to read Zenith.
      Haha no problem 🙂

  10. I’ve seen The Devil Wears Prada movie and I like it. I always thought I should get around to reading the book, but I’ve heard a lot of bad things about it.
I want to read The Vampire Diaries series before I watch the TV series. So far, the books aren’t very good.

    1. The movie is really good. Same, but so many people have said it’s bad so I don’t think it’s worth it. I’ve read The Vampire Diaries books, they got progressively worse. The tv show is good though.

  11. The Host was a solid standalone and I looooooooved it!! I really hope you give it a try because the premise was quite unique. Well, Everything Everything is either a hit or a miss, for me, fortunately, it was the former. The Selection series was such a bore, I finished it because I already had the trilogy, otherwise I definitely wouldn’t have picked up book 2. And I have pretty much the same opinion about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as yours and I don’t think I will be pocking it up ever.

  12. I only heard good things about The Selection! (And I freaking fell in love with this series, even though I was convinced it wasn’t my type!) So I hope you’ll pick it up!

Also, Everything Everything shook me so much when I read it. I loved it! Though since you already know the plot twist at the end, I guess it probably won’t be as great if you do read it. That was my favorite part haha.

    1. That’s good to hear about The Selection! I might give it a go one day 🙂
I’m glad you liked Everything Everything. It was a pretty shocking plot twist. Maybe I’ll pick it up one day 🙂

  13. Ah I really relate to this post, cos negative reviews have put me off before. I wasn’t familiar with the authors for Zenith, but have been completely put off by the reviews. And I felt like Cursed Child was a cash grab too- and since it’s not technically written by Rowling, I’ve no desire to read it. Honestly, Selection is really not worth reading.

  14. Charlotte, I don’t think I’ve ever avoided reading a book because of negative reviews. If it is something I want to read, or, something that was given to me to review I will read it and make up my own mind.
As far as spoilers in reviews go, I think they should be absolutely forbidden. What are the reviewers thinking? Would you want to know what happens in a movie before you go to see it? NO! Then why do they think someone wants to know what happens in a book before they read it? Summaries YES – Spoilers NO! I write reviews because I want others to read the book in question. If it is a book I didn’t personally enjoy, that doesn’t mean that another person won’t enjoy it. I try to let them know just enough about it to be interested, not too much, or the magic would be lost…

    1. That’s true, but I usually trust negative reviews (only if I agree with them). There’s also been many times that I’ve read a negative review and still wanted to read the book.
Haha exactly! Spoilers should never be included in a review, which I guess can be hard for some people. I try to do the same as well – maybe sometimes I forget that my review should be a bit more vague.
