Do You Really Care If You Read A Spoiler?

discussion template

People seem to really care about spoilers. If one is shared with someone by accident, they are usually infuriated and feel the text has lost its intrigue, especially if it was something they were planning on reading or watching. I seem to have a completely different perspective on hearing spoilers, but it changes according to whether it is a book, film or television show. And when someone offers up a spoiler to me, I will greedily take it. Do I have any patience? No, I do not.

Spoilers in Books

For me, I often do not care if I purposefully or accidentally find out about a spoiler from a book. If I am reading a book that I am really enjoying, and it contains a sort of mystery, I will sometimes times flick through the pages to find out what it is before reaching it naturally. This is not always the case, though, as more often than not I will find out what the mystery is in my own time. But when I do desperately search the written words to find out what the Big Reveal is, it is usually because I am just really invested in the story. If I find out the spoiler on my own, the reason is usually that I just love the novel so much that I want to know what happens immediately.

Spoilers in Film

If it is for a film, my opinions are slightly different, but also very similar. I love being surprised, but if I want to know the outcome of a film, I will not be able to stop myself from getting spoiled and reading the plot on Wikipedia. It is the best way of finding where the story goes and what happens to the characters in the end. Even if I don’t want to be spoiled and instead want the shock of the plot twist, I will be so persistent on ruining my privilege of not knowing that I subconsciously look for the twist without agreeing to it first. And then I realise that I have ruined the movie for myself.

The shock and surprise of a plot twist is undoubtedly better than searching for it before it happens. The most notable plot twist that I watched and did not know beforehand was the one in Gone Girl (2014). I watched the film before reading the book, and I found the twist to be very unexpected, likely because I was not prepared for it like I would be if I had spoiled the ending.

Spoilers in Television

I don’t care when it comes to television. Give me all the spoilers I can get, I won’t care. I’m sure I’ll watch the show anyway. One time that I actually did hold off and wait for the build-up was the ‘A’ reveal in Pretty Little Liars. The show aired a few hours before I could watch it, so I could have easily looked on Twitter to see who ‘A’ was. Thankfully, I waited it out, and was thoroughly surprised! I was really hoping it would be Aria, but sadly it wasn’t (don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler if you haven’t watched it). I wonder if I will be able to hold out for the ‘AD’ reveal in a few months. I am sure I will, I hardly care about that show anymore. Otherwise, television doesn’t effect me the way that film does, and that could be because I don’t really care that much about television.

When Someone Offers a Spoiler

When someone offers a spoiler, I will usually take it. If I am reading a review on Goodreads and there is a section that reads spoiler, I will click on it. The temptation is too hard to resist. If someone is talking about a book or television show that they have recently read or seen, I will want to know what happens, even if they don’t offer to tell me.

  • So I don’t really care if I read a spoiler… Do you?

  1. Ahh those moments in pretty little liars lol. I still watch but of course it’s the last season and it’s not as great as the first few. For me it just depends because some spoilers tell the whole story! I don’t want that. Sometimes I’ll look for certain spoilers. But if it’s juicy and not the main event of the book or show or whatever I’ll take it. Something to get me to watch more.

    1. Pretty little liars is not as good anymore you’re right, I liked the last episode though. Yeah I don’t want spoilers that ruin the story but sometimes I can’t help looking for them! I agree though, little spoilers keep me interested 🙂

  2. I’m with you, I don’t particularly care about spoilers. I don’t actively seek them out most of the time, but if I happen to get spoiled, I don’t mind. And I care even less about spoilers in tv and film. Since books are a bigger time investment I try to stay un-spoiled to have the full payoff of getting to the reveal, but if I accidentally spoil myself it’s not the end of the world.

  3. People get really bent out of shape over spoilers but I don’t. I love to read a book without even reading the synopsis because then it’s like figuring out what the book is about as I go. But if I read or hear a spoiler it let’s me make a more informed designing about whether or not I want to read the book. I’m ok either way 🙂

    1. I do the same thing you mentioned , about not reading the synopsis , it’s more fun to find out about the story as you read

  4. I enjoy spoilers! Regardless of the ending, I will still continue to read or watch. I spoiled the ending of Gone Girl because I was upset about the things I was reading and wanted to know what happened. I think I enjoy spoilers because I get prepared emotionally lol. And if someone tells me what the spoiler is, I have a tendency of not believing them so I continue to see if they were telling the truth…Does this mean that I have trust issues? Lol!

    1. Exactly I will still read or watch if I hear a spoiler! Sometimes it’s hard to resist, like it would have been with Gone Girl. Wow I don’t think I’ve not believed a spoiler before but I definitely don’t think you have trust issues lol 🙂

  5. I have to stop my Mom all the time from telling THE. ENTIRE. BOOK. I like surprises. I don’t like to know what my Christmas gifts are. I’m that kind of person. If it’s a book I really am looking forward to I sometimes can’t go on and read it–or if I do it’s years later. If it’s a book I really haven’t waited for I don’t always care.

    Great topic and discussion!

    1. That’s interesting that you won’t continue to read! I will still continue to read because there’s still things you will learn that you haven’t been spoiled about. But I agree, it is really important in books not to be spoiled. Thanks so much 🙂

  6. I don’t get super upset like some people do, but if I’m invested in a story I do try to avoid spoilers if possible. I even try not to read the blurb on the back of a book, because they often toss out important plot points willy-nilly.

  7. I don’t really like spoiled for TV, movies or with books. Mainly because I want the journey of the book and I want to be surprised. Now if it happens on accident I wont be mad, but chances are I wont finish the book. That is just how I am, this happened a few weeks ago. I was reading a book and someone mentioned something about the end without really thinking. I tried to keep reading, but knowing how it was going to end kinda ruined it for me. For me it turns into a “well I know how it ends, whats the point?” On another note, if someone does it on purpose I get pretty irate.

    1. That makes sense! If someone did it on purpose I would be a bit annoyed too. I agree that the journey of the story should make you surprised. If someone told me the ending to a book i would probably still read it though, that’s interesting you wouldn’t! But I get what you mean, it does make you ask what’s the point lol

  8. haha the short answer is yes. I just find it spoils a certain amount of enjoyment I would have had if I hadn’t known it- for me it’s a bit like rereading it rather than reading it the first time. It’s fine, but it’s just not as good. So when someone offers a spoiler I run in the opposite direction. And, for the record, it’s fine that spoilers are out there to be searched, I just hate when I can’t avoid them even when I want to (too often it’ll be on news websites as the headline- it’s so annoying!!) Anyway, great discussion to have- and I love hearing your perspective cos it’s so different from mine 😀

    1. Haha! I agree it definitely does ruin the enjoyment and is sort of like rereading lol, good point. Oh yeah it’s super annoying when the spoilers are there and you come across them, that happened to me yesterday with pretty little liars. Thanks for your perspective, I totally get what you mean 🙂

  9. This is a really interesting topic that you’ve brought up! For me, I don’t want to see spoilers but if I do, I don’t really mind, though there have been times where I’ve been spoiled and I try to block it out and pretend I never saw it! (It never works I’m afraid)

  10. I don’t care for spoilers. This is probably because I read (and watch) a lot of mystery/suspense. Spoilers would ruin the whole ‘whodunit’ aspect of it for me.

  11. Interesting thoughts! You sound like my sister. She always reads an in depth, spoilery synopsis of a book or movie before she reads or watches it. She says it’s because she wants to make sure she likes it and the ending before committing, which to me is craaaazy. I actually consider a TON of things spoilers. And any little spoiler usually bugs me! Let’s just say there’s a character in a certain popular YA series. When he’s introduced, he has a certain last name. But later on in the series we learn he’s a member of a different family. And it drives me BONKERS when people refer to him with the new last name, rather than the original one. Because I’m like, “THIS IS A SPOILER!!” When the big reveal came about his real father, I was like, “Oh wow. Surprise, surprise. NOT.”

A lot of times I’ll avoid rereading synopses because I like going in with a blank slate. Very recently I really didn’t like The Night Circus because I had such a vivid idea of what would happen, but then the story didn’t match up to the synopsis. So recently I read The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West and thought it was super fun and cute. So I just decided to pick up another one of her books without reading the synopsis. To me, going in completely blind can be fun. But often reading something where I know exactly what happens… it’s almost like, “What’s the point?”

    1. Haha if I’m your sister then you’re my brother! He can’t stand spoilers and even the tiniest one will make him annoyed. I love getting little spoilers because it makes me more intrigued! I totally get where you’re coming from when a character might change a name. This happened to me in a book series but I won’t say which one and it did totally ruin the surprise for me! Going in blind can definitely be fun 🙂 I’ve heard of The Fill-In Boyfriend, I’ll check it out. Thanks for your great comment!

  12. Ahh, I cannot deal with spoilers in books! I don’t mind about TV shows or movies, but there is something about a book that I consider sacred and I like to enjoy each and every page. Having said that, when it comes to trilogies or series, I like to read reviews that summarise a persons overall feelings about a book (Basically just if they liked it) Because I like to know the trilogy or series is worth the investment of my time… Such a great post! Really enjoyed and will be returning to your blog again! Count me as a new follower 🙂

    1. I agree, I don’t really like spoilers in books as much as spoilers in movies or tv shows! I always do that for series, it’s necessary to know whether the next book is good or not and a lot of the time reading the review will be a spoiler in some way! Good point, it is great to know whether it will be worth my time! Thanks so much Sarah, so happy you liked the post 🙂

  13. I can’t stand spoilers! Especially when it comes to books- something I’ve invested a lot of time in. My mum though will read the last page of a book before she starts it from the beginning! She says she can’t relax and enjoy the story otherwise, so she obviously doesn’t mind spoilers!!

    1. I get what you mean!! Haha I used to do what your mum does and I know the feeling of not being able to relax unless you know what happens! Luckily I’ve stopped doing that now because I would always do it unintentionally 😂
