The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Hey everyone!

Recently I was tagged by meltingpotsandothercalamities to do “The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag”. Thanks for tagging me! This tag is all about sharing your unpopular opinions about books and was created by The Book Archer.

A POPULAR BOOK OR BOOK SERIES THAT YOU DIDN’T LIKE:

I really disliked The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I read it when I was fifteen and I guess I didn’t get that it’s a metaphor for capitalism and blah blah blah. I actually now think it’s a great message and very creative. But, at the time, I was like WTF, why are kids killing each other? The first book was very fun to read, I’ll admit, and I really enjoyed it. Then I found out in the second book that (spoiler) Katniss has to back into the hunger games and do it all over again and I was so angry while reading that book. I didn’t finish it and didn’t read the last book.

A POPULAR BOOK OR BOOK SERIES THAT EVERYONE ELSE SEEMS TO HATE BUT YOU LOVE:

I have noticed that a lot of people dislike Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver! I really enjoyed it when I read it when I was 14, and I watched the film a few weeks ago and still liked the story.

AN OTP THAT YOU DON’T LIKE:

One reason I didn’t really enjoy reading the Throne of Glass series is because the love interest was really boring. There was a love triangle going on in the first book but I had no idea who I was rooting for. I also hate that it is a spoiler to tell you who Celaena ends up with. So the Celaena/spoiler one in the first book. I hated it. It was boring.

A POPULAR BOOK GENRE THAT YOU HARDLY REACH FOR.:

I hardly reach for science-fiction. I don’t really like it because it is confusing for me, which isn’t the author’s fault. It’s just not my style.

A POPULAR/BELOVED CHARACTER THAT YOU DO NOT LIKE:

Daemon Black from the Lux series. I don’t hate him but there were several times where I thought he was being horrible to Katy, especially in Obsidian. There’s no way I would be attracted to a person like that.

A POPULAR AUTHOR THAT YOU CAN’T SEEM TO GET INTO:

Sarah J. Maas is an author I don’t think I’ll be reading more from. I tried with Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight, and had to skim the last third of the second one because I was getting bored. I’m not a big fan of fantasy, so that may be one of the reasons why.

A POPULAR BOOK TROPE THAT YOU’RE TIRED OF SEEING:

I really hate it when books use a LGBT character as a plot device. I don’t usually complain about it when I see it in a book, because sometimes it’s just a harmless thing to do to create more room for surprises within the story. But I do roll my eyes when I see it, and lately I have seen it a lot.

A POPULAR SERIES THAT YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN READING.:

I know I included it in a SFF TBR once, but I don’t really want to read City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I do want to know what the fuss is about but I should have picked it up when I saw it heaps in the school library when I was like thirteen. Even then I had no interest in reading it. I know it’s a great series but it’s not really my thing!

THE SAYING GOES “THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE”, BUT WHAT MOVIE OR TV SHOW ADAPTATION DO YOU PREFER MORE THAN THE BOOK?:

A_Walk_to_Remember_Poster

My favourite film is A Walk to Remember. It is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. I read it after watching the film and thought the film was much better. It is also the same for The Notebook. Those films were just really good! I have seen A Walk to Remember twice and cried both times. Maybe the reason I did not like the book as much because it is so focused on religion and I’m not religious, and in the film they mention it a lot less.

  1. I feel the same way about The Hunger Games and City of Bones series. I read the first book of the Hunger Games and was not thrilled by it. I tried the second one a few times, but never could get past the first 30 pages. For the City of Bones series I read the first four books, I know I read a good chunk of them. But at this point I just started to get annoyed by everything and I cannot honestly pin point a specific reason. Everything just started to rub me the wrong way.

    1. Everyone seems to love The Hunger Games, so I’m surprised you agree with me! I’m the same, finished the first book but couldn’t get through the second. I doubt I’ll ever read City of Bones, I liked series as a kid but cannot get through them now as an adult. So I get that things started to annoy you, that’s what happens when I try reading series.

  2. Hey there lovely! Thanks so much for tagging me! I love your answers here. I’ve seen Before I Fall floating around for quite a while and now, thanks to you, I have the perfect excuse to go to Barnes & Noble to pick it up today! ❤ 😀

  3. No way! You think the films for A Walk to Remember AND the Notebook are better than the books? You’re killing me here! 😉While I do think those movies are great (and the best adaptations of his books) I just have such a soft spot for the novel versions. Maybe because I’m a little more religious?

    1. I just love those films so much! And maybe it’s because I read those books too young, I think I was 13. But I still love Nicholas Sparks, he’s one of my favourite authors 🙂

  4. I’ve never read The Hunger Games – it just never really appealed to me. The message sounds great, but I’ve never felt inclined to pick it up. I’ve read the entire TMI series and it’s meh. I prefer the tv show haha

    1. Same, I only read it because my friends liked it. I’ve never wanted to read the TMI series, but so many people love it so I feel like I’m missing out. Haven’t seen the show either!

  5. I found THG to be such a disappointing trilogy. I loved the first book but, from then on, it just went downhill for me.
And really? People hate Before I Fall? I didn’t think such a mild book could inspire such strong emotions, to be honest… But oh well, to each their own.
I’m not sure who you’re talking about when it comes to who Celaena ended up with, seeing as I don’t think you’ve finished the series?
Anyway, wonderful post! Love this tag, it always sparks great discussion hahaha

    1. Yeah same! I just couldn’t get into that series like a lot of others.
I’ve seen a few negative reviews of Before I Fall, and I can’t understand it either! Oh just in the first book, she ends up with Dorian (is that his name?) I didn’t really enjoy that haha, but oops that’s not who she is with for long.
      Thank you!!

      1. Oh yeah, that’s what I thought too but wasn’t sure. Yeah, I was never a Dorian/Celaena shipper. My one true love is Chaol hahaha ❤
Unfortunately for me, that will never happen 😥 With whom would you want her to end up, if you could choose?
        And you're very welcome! ^^

      2. Aww won’t Chaol happen, that sucks. Out of those two I’d definitely pick Chaol! ❤️ I thought it would be cliched if she ended up with Dorian, so I was rooting for Chaol the whole time! So I was surprised with the ending. But seeing as I didn’t read past the second book I don’t know much else, though I’ve heard there’s some other dude she’s involved with haha

      3. Yeah, Celaena does get her fair share of love interests I guess… Not my favorite part of the series, to be honest! I just really wanted her and Chaol to happen but alas, I’ll have to keep reading my fanfiction xD
Glad to hear you’d chose Chaol as well, though! Are you going to read his novella? It’s called Tower of Dawn. I’m really hoping against hope it’ll be good.

      4. Yeah too many love interests in one series is a bit hard to follow. Oh well, at least there’s fanfiction haha. Hmm I probably won’t read it, unless everyone really likes it. Hope for your sake it is good! 🙂
