Top 5 Wednesday: Summer Reads

Wednesday has come around once again and it’s time for another Top 5 Wednesday! The topic this week is ‘Summer Reads’. It is actually a topic that does not relate to my geographical location but I don’t read books based on the season anyway. To be honest, when I think of summer I think of Christmas, and the first book that came to my mind was My True Love Gave To Me by Stephanie Perkins (and others). But that would be a really inappropriate book to include on this list… Anyway, let’s get started!

The books I have chosen relate mostly to my own experiences with reading in summer. I also associate ‘summer reads’ with young adult for some reason.

1. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

This book transpires over summer. The main character, Lennie, is devastated after her older sister dies unexpectedly. As she grieves over her loss, she is suddenly caught in a love triangle between her dead sister’s boyfriend and the new boy to school. Although it covers a heavy theme, this book is relatively light-hearted and easy to read. It is also quite sweet and written very well.

2. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

This would have to be my favourite on the list. It follows the rebellious Ronnie as she is forced to stay with her dad over the summer. She struggles with remaining civil to her father and at the same time meets a boy she quickly falls for. This story is set during the summer and was such a joy to read when I was younger. The summer feel is very evident in this book and is not solely focused on the romance but also the relationship she has with her family.

3. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

This one is more of a thriller but also ties in with young adult. It is about a girl, Cady, who goes to her grandparents’ island every summer on vacation. With her are the ‘liars’, two of her cousins and one of their friends. But something happened to Cady and the liars two summers ago that makes this summer different and Cady is having a difficult time getting over it. I really loved this book! I read it so fast and could not believe the ending, it was so creative. I really hope this becomes a movie because I would so watch it.

4. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

My Life Next Door did not wow me like the others on this list did but if you want a pure, relaxing summer read then this one is for you! It is mostly about a romance between Samantha and Jase, who have been neighbours their whole life. Samantha has always looked into Jase’s house with interest because he has so many siblings. Not only does Samantha fall in love with Jase, but she battles working three jobs over summer and dealing with her family’s drama. I liked this story but I would only read it for pure entertainment.

5. Just Listen by Sarah Desson

I read this book so long ago I can barely remember it! I really liked it though. It is about Annabel, a girl who once had everything but now has no best friend and struggles at home because her sister is anorexic. She meets Owen and he helps her come to terms with something that happened to her one night that caused her life to fall apart. I do not know whether this book takes place over summer but I have a feeling it does (I’m probably wrong). Not only is there a love story incorporated, but there is sad realisations that Annabel goes through that really stuck with me as a thirteen-year-old girl.
